The Golden Fleece

The Golden Fleece is a really nice pub on Mansfield Road which has been taken over by the owner of the Angel Microbrewery (and former owner of the Alley Café). There’s a roof terrace which is nice in the summer. They sometimes have DJs and live music.

There are a few vegan food options on the menu and there are vegan cask and keg beers. Roast dinner is served on Sunday.

4550 Miles From Delhi

According to the Internet, Nottingham is 4,195 miles from Delhi so I’m not sure where this restaurant got its name. Anyway, this is a very nice Indian restaurant with a number of vegan dishes which are marked on the menu. The food is prepared to a very high quality and presented nicely. Staff are very helpful.

Although the address is on Mount Street, the entrance is on Maid Marian Way with the eating area upstairs (I think there may be some seating downstairs for wheelchair users).

The Balti House

Budget Indian restaurant with separate vegetarian menu and lots of vegan options.

Tamatanga

An ‘urban Indian canteen’ – essentially an Indian version of Wagamama. The food is very tasty and they have a separate vegan menu including 5 curries, a balti and a thali (for £16.95). There is sorbet for dessert. The staff are helpful and knowledgeable.

They deliver through Deliveroo and also offer a take-away service: phone in your order and pick it up.

Mayfair Chinese Restaurant

A very simple and cheap Chinese restaurant with friendly staff and several delicious vegan-adaptable dishes. The portions are huge. They don’t serve alcohol but you can bring your own – there are many off-licences near-by. A very good place to go after visiting one of the many excellent pubs along this road. The upstairs room can accommodate fairly large groups.

Takeaway is available but you have to collect; parking is available on North Sherwood Street.

Kayal

Kayal serves delicious South Indian food, which is quite different to the Bangladeshi-derived food of normal Indian restaurants.

Main meals come with a dosa – a thin pancake which can be dipped into various chutneys.

The staff at Kayal understand the needs of vegans and are helpful and friendly.

Annie’s Burger Shack

Annie’s Burger Shack has dozens of varieties of burger which can all be made vegan. There is a huge variety and a lot of imaginative recipes. For example, the Sunday Dinner burger has mock chicken, roast pudding, roast potatoes and stuffing all in a bun. All burgers come with wedges or fries. Cost from £8.90 for a basic burger to around £12.90 for a huge Boston Nibbler burger – two patties, cheese, bacon, pineapple and onion rings!

There is also a specials board which may include desserts (e.g. a vegan chocolate cake with chocolate sauce) and vegan real ale on tap and in bottles.

Annie’s has also started serving breakfasts and, like the burgers, they are huge and delicious. Vegan options include blueberry pancakes and filled bagels.

Annie’s is very popular so it can be hard to get a table, so booking well in advance is advised. However, there are tables left free for walk-ins each day so you may be lucky, particularly if you turn up just before they open.

Las Iguanas

Las Iguanas is a chain of restaurants serving South American style food and drinks with a separate vegan menu. There are some very nice options including fajitas, burritos, jackfruit curry, guacamole, patatas bravas and sorbet for pudding. There’s a good range of drinks including cocktails (years ago I had my first ever caipirinha here).

They cope very well with large groups so it’s a good place for birthday celebrations and workplace outings.

The restaurant is centrally located just off the Old Market Square. To save time, ask for the vegan menu when you go in, as you are shown to your table.
